When Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander entered the interview cubicle at a recent press day for Season 4 of their top-rated crime series "Rizzoli & Isles," the duo was finalizing their plans to attend the network's murder mystery bash together later that evening. When Alexander complained that her energy level was bottoming out and Harmon offered to share her coffee, the former "NCIS" star, who worries about getting diabetes like her father did, knew to decline the swig of Starbucks because Harmon adds too much sugar. They finish each other's sentences, laugh at each other's jokes, and give each other fashion advice.

Episode 15: "No More Drama in My Life"

Last we saw Jane (Angie Harmon) and Maura (Sasha Alexander), Lydia (Alexandra Holden) — aka the ex-girlfriend of both Jane's dad Frank (Chazz Palmintieri) and her brother Tommy (Colin Egglesfield) — had left her newborn son on Maura's doorstep. This, of course, was moments after Maura was nearly killed and stuffed inside a statue by cuckoo Dennis (Eddie Cibrian). Who's the father of Lydia's baby? 1. Who's the father? Frank or Tommy? A paternity test will be done in the midseason premiere, at the hands of Maura, so the question will finally be put to bed. In the interim, Rizzoli & Isles & Co. take in the infant, nicknamed T.J. for Tommy Jr. — and Jane's got babies on the brain. "There's this moment where Jane is considering taking care of this baby and Maura's the reality check of, 'Really? You really think you can do that?' Alexander tells TVGuide.com. "She has to knock some sense into her. They both are not in relationships that have offered them the opportunity in their lives yet to turn that corner. The reality of working the jobs that they do and raising a child alone is extremely difficult. That doesn't meant they won't do it at some point."

Now that we’re a few weeks into the new season and have dialed down the drama between the ladies, you may be wondering when Maura will delve into finding Hope, the woman who gave birth to her. Well, as Sasha Alexander told me, “It’s not until Episode 5 (airing July 3) that Maura decides that the curiosity is killing her, and she really wants to find her biological mother.” Played in a multi-episode arc by Sharon Lawrence (NYPD Blue), Hope’s introduction promises to be “very interesting,” Alexander says, in part because her adoptive mother Constance “did know her. NATALIE: No, Dean is still in the picture, but Jane has bigger fish to fry when her old flame Lt. Col. Casey Jones (Chris Vance) returns next week — injured — which sets up one doozy of a triangle. "There's a little more to [his injury] and she doesn't know how to react at first," Angie Harmon tells us. "She's not exactly skilled in the areas of the heart and I love the way she handles it. But Dean is certainly in there, which is problematic, and her heart's telling her one thing and she has to figure out if she's acting accordingly or not."
Hey, remember how Season 2 ended, with Jane shooting Maura’s dad? That’s gotta leave a mark – on their she-lationship, right? Things will be a little complicated when Season 3 picks up on June 5? “I would say a lot complicated!” Angie Harmon tells me with a chuckle. She then adds: “If you’ve ever had a fight with someone you love or care about, this is the show for you. It’s very high stakes these two are fighting over.” Harmon then echoes that which her leading lady Sasha Alexander shared with me, that this rift ‘tween the crime-solvers won’t be smoothed over overnight. “I personally like that they didn’t bring it together full-circle in one episode,” Harmon says. “It takes a little bit.”
In Season Two, you mentioned that having your best friend shoot your father -- even if he was estranged and a mobster -- is kind of a tough thing to get over in a friendship. Sasha: No, they wrap up pretty quickly. At the end of the first season -- first episode, I'm sorry -- you will, I mean, they get to the bottom of what the crime was, and what actually happened. So I think that that clarifies a lot for both Jane and Maura. But they don't totally -- they're not completely ready to say they're sorry because there's a lot of miscommunication between them. So that leads into the second episode and, you know, Korsak, and (Frost), and Angela all sort of get involved in kind of getting them back together. And they end up in a kind of life or death situation. And so their friendship will kind of come back by the end of the second episode. And they really earn their way back. It's very -- I like the way that it all comes together. It's not wrapped up immediately, but it comes -- they're back together very quickly. Quickly enough.

Then it hit her: Who would be disappointed at seeing Angie Harmon (Rizzoli) in a hooker outfit? "The story line just crackled from there," Tamaro says. "The only problem was, we couldn't get her out of character!"
The scene is part of a flashback in the June 5 opener. "We go back to Jane's undercover drug-investigation roots and the day she first meets Maura," Tamaro says. Back in the present, Maura (Sasha Alexander) still feels betrayed that Jane shot her estranged father, Doyle, last season. (Don't worry, the ladies will eventually reconcile).
And the drama only escalates from there: Jane's soldier love interest returns from Afghanistan with a troubling secret, Maura falls for a motivational speaker (Eddie Cibrian) and Jane's dad (Chazz Palminteri) has a dalliance with a 28-year-old woman with baggage. "She may or may not be dallying with Jane's brother, Tommy, too," Tamaro says. "Just expect a whole lot of juicy trouble."
As Rizzoli & Isles' second season came to an end, a deep wedge was driven between the two friends when Jane shot Maura's biological father, gangster Paddy Doyle (guest star John Doman). He had shown up unexpectedly at a secret undercover operation to protect Maura from a deadly assailant, but the scene quickly got out of control, forcing Jane to shoot Paddy.The aftermath strains Jane and Maura's relationship as they try to understand and justify their reactions. Lawrence will appear in two episodes in Season 3 as Hope, who gave up Maura (Sasha Alexander) for adoption when she was 18 following her relationship with crime boss Paddy Doyle (John Doman). She's now a prominent doctor and an activist for women's health with secrets of her own.
Little was known about Hope until the Season 2 finale when, after Maura's adoptive mother Constance (Jacqueline Bisset) was severely injured, Paddy told his estranged daughter about her biological mother. In the final moments of the episode, Paddy revealed her name.

"I have always toyed with the idea of doing a scene about how they met and I think I've come up with an elegant way to do it," executive producer Janet Tamaro tells us. This episode is the season 2 finale. Maura's mother (Jacqueline Bisset, "Bullitt") and FBI Agent Gabriel Dean (Billy Burke, "Twilight") both reappear, and Peter Bogdanovich guest stars.
Jane and Maura investigate a warehouse fire, hoping to determine whether it was arson or an accident. However, a hit-and-run that leaves someone in the hospital derails the investigation.
Dean shows up unexpectedly to rekindle his relationship with Jane. He gets to see all her scars, but the case interrupts their time together. Jane wears a dress, and there's a scene in her bedroom.

Oh, and there's a pretty intense shootout.
In Rizzoli & Isles, writer Janet Tamaro spills on upcoming storylines, which will revolve around relationship drama as well as trouble in the streets. "You see some relationships that you probably weren't expecting to see," she teases. "We have some surprising guest stars." Jacqueline Bisset and Billy Burke are heading back to Boston.
Both Bisset’s Constance Isles -- Maura’s (Sasha Alexander) adoptive mother – and Burke’s FBI agent Gabriel Dean will return for the Season 2 finale of TNT’s Rizzoli & Isles, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.
The December finale will see Agent Dean show up unexpectedly to rekindle his relationship with Angie Harmon’s Detective Jane Rizzoli only to have a big case disrupt their time together.
Bisset first guest starred in August when the art historian appeared to focus on a case involving a sniper and Revolutionary War re-enactors.
Based on the books by Tess Gerritsen, Rizzoli & Isles is averaging more than 8.8 million viewers this summer, ranking as cable’s most-watched drama series.
Bisset is repped by Steve Kenis & Company, Media Artists Group and Binder & Associates. Burke is with Gersh and Ellen Meyer Management.

That's how Colin Egglesfield described his return to the TNT hit this Monday night, as Tommy is released from prison, crashes at Jane's house and gets close to Maura.
"They play chess together and there are some intense battles," Egglesfield told me. "They develop chemistry. There's a lot of sexual tension there, although Maura is a little hesitant to pursue anything."
Aside from some serious flirting, will Tommy get back into a life of crime? The actor would only hint at what's to come Monday and on a winter episode for which he's also booked.
"There might be some criminal activity," he said. "But is he falling off the deep end? Is he running with the bad crowd again? Or is he just at the wrong place at the wrong time?"
There may be questions surrounding Tommy's future, but there's no questioning how much fun Egglesfield says he's had on set.
"Angie is always amped up, she's like the Energizer Bunny," he said of one-co star. "I don't know if she drinks 20 cups of coffee everyday or if that's just her personality."
Sasha Alexander, meanwhile "is a little more low-key, but she has a wicked sense of humor. She's always cracking jokes before a take, it's hard to keep a straight face."
