"Rizzoli & Isles" make USA Today's TV buddies of summer list!

The Yin: Jane Rizzoli (Angie Harmon, right) is the street tough Boston detective. Her tomboy exterior hides her gentler, more sensitive nature. She's all about t-shirts, hoodies and mixing it up with her brassy, nagging mother (Lorraine Bracco) and her blue-collar father (Chazz Palminteri).

The Yang: Maura Isles (Sasha Alexander) is the brilliant medical examiner and forensics expert who spends more in a week on her high-end, fashionista wardrobe than Rizzoli will spend in a lifetime. As opposed to Rizzoli's in-your-face approach, Isles, very much a loner, is more comfortable with the dead than the living.

The purpose: In the series, inspired by Tess Gerritsen's best-selling thrillers, Rizzoli and Isles team up each week to solve a crime and, just as important, hash out their personal problems. In one episode, Isles pushes Rizzoli into going undercover at a lesbian bar — even suggesting outfits - to catch a killer.
